MRML Information page

While developping the Viper system, it has become apparent that there was a need for a distributed architecture. We have therefore specified MRML, the Multimedia Retrieval Markup Language. This XML-based protocol is a wrapper for shipping multimedia queries and results between a client and a server. This way, we obtain a distributed Client-Server architecture.

Viper architecture

In this context, Viper is the query processor and does not comprise the query interface.

We have designed different MRML-compliant query interfaces including:
  • Snake Charmer: a Java applet shared with the AudioVisual Communications Lab at EPF Lausanne.
  • A PHP interface for easy use over the Internet
  • A Perl client for scripting queries
We have also proposed MRML to the MPEG-7 commity in the context of the experimental model (XM).
